MBA vs. Specialized Master’s Degree
In an interview with the Semana Económica website, Yuri Mendoza, industrial relations manager at Antamina, explains his perception of the differences between an MBA and a specialized master’s degree. “In the first instance, a specialized master’s degree offers the participants more specific knowledge to put into practice in the area where they work. The MBA, on the other hand, offers a wider range of knowledge, many subjects of little depth. This is not ideal for the person who wants to stay and enhance their skills within their area.

According to Fausto García, former academic director of the MBA of the IAE Business School of Argentina, specialized master’s degrees emerge as a natural process. The maturity of the market requires programmes to differentiate themselves, offering an increasingly high level of specificity.

Until recently, MBAs were only available as programmes designed to train executives trained in business management. However, the evolution of the market itself requires more specific specializations, executives with specific backgrounds.

MBAs are programs that offer professionals the necessary support to lead organizations, and therefore enjoy a higher level of management prestige than other programs.

How does specialization work?
To better understand specialization, we will take the area of human resources as an example. Within this area, there are graduates such as labour relations, internal communication or coaching. However, according to Mendoza, the master’s degrees offer a “holistic view” of the entire area of human resources.
